Drunk & Drugged Driving Awareness Month

December is National Drunk & Drugged Driving Awareness Month. We want you to be safe when driving, making good decisions and being on the lookout. The history of this holiday is as follows:

A man named Clarence Busch hit a young 13 year old girl with his vehicle on May 3, 1980 while driving under the influence. When the police arrived and ran the information for Clarence, they discovered that this was not his first offense of driving under the influence and even had fines from a hit and run incident while drinking and driving. During this time period, driving while intoxicated was only a misdemeanor and did not usually mean jail time.

The mother of the 13 year old girl found this absolutely unacceptable. She put together a group of people and called their organization MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving. She pushed for stricter laws and was even part of the reason that Ronald Reagan moved the drinking age up to 21. Candy Lightner still continues to this day to fight for safe driving and continues to be an advocate for anti-drunk driving. 

• In 1990 the supreme court made a constitutional law that sobriety checks by police are to be done. 
• In July of 2004 the entire country adopted the law that .08 is the legal limit for BAC (blood alcohol content).
• A safety bill was passed in July of 2014 to require car ignition interlocks.
